Welcome To Light For Teenage Mothers

About Us

At Light4TeenMoms, we are dedicated to transforming the lives of teenage mothers by providing them with the skills, support, and confidence they need to build a better future.

Founded in 2023 in Naminya, Uganda, our mission is to empower young mothers with practical, employable skills that foster economic independence and personal growth.

Transforming Lives Through Skill Empowerment

Tailoring Training

Tailoring is more than just a trade—it’s a pathway to independence for teenage mothers. Our tailoring program is thoughtfully designed to fit the unique needs of young mothers, allowing them to learn valuable skills while still caring for their children.

In this hands-on course, participants are taught how to sew, take measurements, design patterns, and create garments with precision and creativity.

They gain both traditional and modern tailoring techniques, preparing them for real-world opportunities. Whether they choose to work in tailoring shops, start their own small businesses from home, or offer custom services in their community, the skills they acquire are directly linked to income-generating potential.

Computer Training for Teen Mothers

In today’s digital age, computer skills are no longer optional, they’re essential. Our computer training program is designed specifically for teenage mothers, equipping them with practical, in-demand digital skills that create real pathways to employment and independence.

Through our partnership with Mweva Center, participants gain hands-on training in key areas such as Microsoft Office applications, typing, basic computer literacy, and digital marketing.

These skills not only prepare them for a wide range of job opportunities including data entry, administrative support, social media management, and web design, but also give them the confidence to explore freelance work and remote job markets.

Bakery Skills Training

Our bakery training program offers teenage mothers a chance to turn a passion for baking into a pathway for independence and stability. Designed with flexibility and hands-on learning in mind, the program teaches girls how to make a variety of baked goods—from bread and cakes to cookies and pastries.

Through our partnership with local bakeries, including real-world visits and mentorship, participants learn the basics of food preparation, hygiene, baking techniques, and even business skills. These practical lessons equip them to either seek employment in established bakeries or start their own small baking businesses from home.

Baking is a skill that not only fits easily into daily life but also provides steady income opportunities in a growing market. Whether supplying baked goods to their community or selling at local markets, teenage mothers can build a sustainable livelihood while nurturing their families.

Hairdressing Skills

Hairdressing is one of the most in-demand and flexible trades, making it an ideal skill for teenage mothers seeking a reliable source of income. Our hairdressing program equips participants with hands-on training in braiding, hair treatment, styling, and salon hygiene—empowering them to provide professional services with confidence.

The course is tailored to suit young mothers by offering practical, easy-to-learn techniques and a schedule that fits their daily routines. Whether setting up a home-based salon, offering mobile services, or working in an established beauty center, these skills open doors to immediate job opportunities and financial independence.

Hairdressing allows young women to work close to home, stay connected to their children, and build loyal customer bases within their communities. Beyond income, the training boosts their self-esteem, creativity, and pride in their ability to transform lives—starting with their own.

Art & Craft Skills

Our Art and Craft program celebrates the creativity of teenage mothers while transforming it into a powerful tool for economic empowerment. Through hands-on workshops and guided practice, participants learn to design and produce a range of handmade items—including traditional crafts, beadwork, woven products, jewelry, home décor, and modern creative art.

This training not only nurtures their artistic talents but also teaches them how to package, price, and market their work. By visiting local art and craft shops and engaging with successful artisans, the girls gain inspiration and insight into how their creativity can become a sustainable source of income.

Craft-making is a flexible skill that can be practiced from home, allowing young mothers to earn while caring for their children. It also connects them to local and tourist markets, opening up opportunities for business growth and financial freedom.

Child Minding Support for Learning Mothers

At Light for Teenage Mothers, we understand that one of the biggest barriers young mothers face in gaining skills is the lack of childcare. That’s why we provide dedicated child minding services during training session, ensuring that mothers can focus fully on their learning without the worry of who will look after their children.

Our child-friendly spaces are safe, engaging, and nurturing, offering basic early childhood support through play, interaction, and care. Trained caregivers attend to the children’s needs while their mothers participate in classes like tailoring, baking, computer training, hairdressing, and crafts.

This service makes our programs more accessible and inclusive. It also gives mothers peace of mind, knowing their children are in good hands while they work toward a better future. By supporting the whole family, we create a learning environment where both mothers and their children can grow and thrive.

Other Services

At Light for Teenage Mothers, we believe that healing the mind is just as important as building skills. That’s why we offer counseling services as part of our holistic support for young mothers enrolled in our programs.

Many of the girls we work with have faced trauma, stigma, rejection, or emotional hardship. Our trained counselors provide a safe, confidential space where they can express themselves, process their experiences, and regain self-worth. These sessions are designed to build resilience, boost confidence, and support mental well-being.

By addressing emotional challenges early, we help teen mothers focus better during training, stay motivated, and fully engage in the learning process. This not only improves their chances of success but also allows them to envision a future filled with hope and possibilities—for themselves and their children.

How We Do It

1. Identifying Areas of High Need

We focus on communities where teenage mothers face economic hardship, social stigma, and limited opportunities. By identifying areas where our programs can make the greatest difference, we ensure that our efforts lead to tangible, lasting change.

2. Home Visits & Personalized Support

We visit teenage mothers in their homes to understand their first-hand experiences and assess their economic well-being. These visits allow us to: Listen to their challenges and dreams. Identify the support they need—whether skills training, counseling, or financial empowerment. Arrange counseling for those facing emotional distress or stigma.

3. Induction & Hands-On Experience

For girls interested in our programs, we arrange visits to our partner training centers for a practical induction process, which includes: Hearing from graduates who share their success stories and life after training. Hands-on practice in core skills like computer typing, Microsoft Word, and basic tailoring techniques. Exploring options and choosing the training pathway that fits their future goals.

4. Building Confidence & Planning for the Future

Through practical exposure and mentorship, the girls gain: Confidence to pursue their ambitions. Clarity to decide which training—computer skills, tailoring, baking, hairdressing, or craft-making—best aligns with their future goals.

5. Journey to Economic Independence

Once a girl starts her training, she embarks on a journey toward self-sufficiency. With each skill learned, she moves closer to: Starting her own business or finding employment. Achieving economic independence and breaking the cycle of poverty. Restoring her dignity and securing a brighter future for herself and her child.

Creating Lasting Impact

At Light4TeenMoms, every girl deserves a second chance and with the right support, she can rewrite her story.

At Light4TeenMoms, we work in areas with a high rate of single teenage mothers, where the need for support and empowerment is most urgent. Our hands-on, personalized approach allows us to deliver high-impact interventions that transform lives.
